I completed a BSc (Hons) in Anatomy at the University of Galway, an MSc in Neuroscience at the University of Edinburgh and a PhD in Neuroscience at Northwestern University. My doctoral research involved studying the role of a gene, CHCHD10, in neuromuscular disease.
As part of my NeuroInsight postdoctoral fellowship under the supervision of Prof. Jochen Prehn, I propose to develop oligogenic in vitro models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The models will be functionally characterised in an effort to elucidate mechanisms underlying ALS pathogenesis in the context of an increased genetic susceptibility burden. I expect these models to provide insight into dysregulated pathways relevant to neurodegeneration in ALS that can be targeted in the future development of diagnostic and therapeutic treatment options.
