Biography

Alan Smeaton is a Full Professor of Computing at Dublin City University since 1997, and a Founding Director of the Insight SFI Research Centre for Data Analytics. His expertise is in analysis, indexing and retrieval of all kinds of visual media, especially video.

Alan is a Member of the Royal Irish Academy, and winner of Academy's Gold Medal for Engineering Sciences in 2015. He is also a former Board member of Irish Research Council, former member of inaugural Scientific Committee for COST (€300M EU funds), Fellow of the IEEE and Chair of ACM SIGMM (Special Interest Group in Multimedia) (2017-2021).
